The recent revamp of the Newcastle Art School’s gallery is just in time for a number of exhibitions highlighting the work of current students. Producing high standards is apparent in the most recent exhibition titled “Launch”. Each student having been asked to curate a space has succeeded in highlighting their major area of study whether it is painting, printmaking, sculpture or photography.
Detailed etchings captivate with an intriguing blend of imagery. Kathryn Taunton reveals a delicate reverie with veiled meaning and bewitching depth. Her impossibly beautiful attention to intricate motif is subtle and elusive and completely mesmerising.
On a grand trajectory towards tribal abstraction is artist Sharon Williams. Bold symbols established using sand as the primary medium describe a talent willing to experiment with materials to create attractive and curious art. The juxtaposition of her sculpture made from meandering ply continues the symbolic expression.
With stunning simplicity Sarah Stein aka Penumbra also demonstrates the strength of printmaking at the school. Tantalizing labyrinths of complex elements are woven into a web of enthral. These sophisticated lino prints demonstrate exquisite technique.
Numerous talented students from the Advanced Diploma of Visual Arts will be exhibiting throughout September and October. The gallery is located at 590 Hunter St Newcastle West and is open Tues- Fri 10-5.
