Water belongs to the sea and the sea belongs to mermaids. Well not really. But the latest exhibition at Timeless Textiles is a testament to the power of the ocean and most particularly to the tales of the mermaid. The artist Amanda Donohue garners inspiration from the watery environment. Hues of blue and white dominate the palette and symbols such as mermaids, fish, shells and waves are plentiful.

The myth of the mermaid has proved an enduring fascination for Amanda. Particularly alluring is a hand stitched mermaid on a doily. Doilies are not the height of sophistication but I must admit to having a soft spot for these long discarded beauties of the home. In this rendition the artist has splendidly sewn shells in a naive style about the edge while the mermaid holds centre stage.

Also notable is a series of woodcut prints on tulle. These floating pieces of art are hanging in series so a mystical scene evolves when viewing for a long period.

This poetic exhibition highlights the desire of the artist to express herself through fabric, printmaking and hand stitching. There is a quaint appeal happening in the exhibition Undercurrent which can be viewed at Timeless Textiles until 12th July.
