Opening the box

A Pandora Group invitational exhibtion.

Artists from The Pandora Group include: Patricia Wilson-Adams, Sally Bourke, Annemarie Murland and Linda Swinfield.

Artists invited include: Una Rey, Carla Feltham, Joy Longworth, Kiera O’Toole, Caroline Hale, Melanie Lazarow.

On exhibition at Four Point Gallery until 3rd December.

Continuing the exploration of mid-20th century abstraction is a group of female artists known as The Pandora Group. The cluster of abstract elements in this exhibition indicates the journey this art form has taken to reach the present sense of the minimal and conceptual in contemporary art.

First exhibiting as a group in 2006 this current show invites 6 additional artists. What transpires is a resonant collection of drawing, sculpture, photography and painting.

Mixed media sculptures by Patricia Wilson-Adams appear quizzical and alert massed together. The acknowledgement of the postmodern concept of appropriation, where ideas from the past are borrowed to establish relevance to current circumstances, is discussed using shape and configuration.

Titled  “Landing in Sydney 1 and 2” Melanie Lazarow demonstrates with 2 acrylic paintings, the visual impact colour and contour possess in  assembled meandering cityscapes. The congested feel of impact and collision is perhaps an indication of the volatility of massing disparate entities.

The 10 artists in this show attest to the advantage of knowledge and experience when curating an exhibition. Sensitivity exists within this sophisticated work building on current aesthetics and challenges developed in abstract art today.
